We are deeply saddened to learn that the statue of Mahatma Gandhi, the globally acclaimed leader of the Indian independence movement, an international symbol and advocate of peace, located in the Buenos Aires Park in Yerevan, has recently been desecrated by unknown individuals.

Unfortunately, the desecration of the statue is a result of the baseless, negative propaganda spread by some circles in recent days. Such dishonourable steps do a grave disservice to our country and drive a wedge between Armenians and the friendly Indian people. We call on all our citizens not to give in to provocations and not follow the baseless, unsubstantiated statements made by the above-mentioned groups.

 

While it is the right of every citizen to express their views on such matters, we believe they should do so in a more civilized manner without hurting the sentiments of Indians or casting a shadow on the firm and friendly ties shared by our countries. We also urge such people to refrain from misusing Mahatma Gandhi's name in their attempt to settle political scores with the Government.
